Zinc Air cells, commonly known as "button cells" are small in size, and provide sustained reliable power for critical applications such as hearing aids, calculators, infusion pumps, pager equipment etc.

| The chemistry of a zinc air cell is similar to an alkaline cell. | |
| Generally, because of their miniature size, these cells require materials of the highest energy density and quality to have a reasonable capacity. |

Postives | Negatives |
| Lowest cost miniature primary cell, per unit of energy delivered. | Limited peak power capability in button cell sizes. |
| Long service life. | Once activated (tab removed), shelf life is very short. |
| Excellent storage life, prior to activation. | Requires air access thru the device. |
| Generally good leakage protection. | High initial cost. |
| High specific energy density as the cell needs to hold only anode material. | Primarily for continuous (long run time devices), i.e.. hearing aids, telemetry monitors. |
