components of a battery

A battery has internal parts, which are enclosed in a metal body. We always see a battery in its external form packed with energy inside.

Anode

Anode is the –ve terminal of a battery.
Ions displaced from the cathode make their way through the electrolyte to the anode.
Anode produces electrons for the external flow of current.
Anode collector is a cap and nail assembly.
It is a non active component.

Cathode

Cathode is the +ve terminal of a battery.
Ions displaced from the cathode make their way through the electrolyte to the anode.
It accepts the electrons given up by the anode.

Separator

Separator is porous in nature and prevents direct physical contact between the cathode and anode.
Separator is soaked with an electrolyte that helps the passage of ionic current once the battery is in use.
